The Oryol Region - Home of the Russian Bison

The Oryol Polesie National Park is home to the largest population of bison in Russia. Today almost 500 representatives of the ancient tribe of forest giants live there.

The unique landscape and even microclimate of Orlovsky Polesie is due to the heritage of ancient glaciers, especially the Moscow Glacier. Coniferous and coniferous-broadleaved forests are interspersed with areas of forest-steppe vegetation, typical taiga species neighbor representatives of steppe fauna.

Standing on the sandy sands, the park is unique in terms of diversity and abundance of fauna. Here you can find hohula, podaliria, great bittern, deer beetle, hazel dormouse or carpenter bee.

The majestic silence of the forest gave birth to the following lines by Turgenev: "The view of the vast, sky-hugging forest, the view of "Polesie" reminds one of the sea. And the impression is the same: the same pristine, untouched power spreads out wide and majestically in front of the viewer".

The characters from Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev's "Notes of the Hunter" lived in Orlovskoye Polesie. According to legend, the park hides a large treasure of Kudeyar, a legendary robber and wizard, an ataman, a character of Russian folklore of the 16th century and brother of Ivan the Terrible.

The Battle Site of Ilya Muromets and Nightingale the Robber

Byliny has told a legend that a defender of the Russian land hero Ilya Muromets defeated Nightingale the Robber in the riverheads Vytebet in the natural boundary Nine Oaks on the territory of the present national park "Orlovskoye Polesie".

From here, the bandit together with his gang attacked merchant caravans, which used the crossing to get from the Desna-Dnepr to the Oka-Volga basin.

The legend says that somewhere here, on the outskirts of the village of Nine Oaks, after a clash with Nightingale the Robber, Ilya Muromets lost his heroic sword.

The L'gov village was first mentioned in the scribe books in 1626-1627. But the common man knows it from the work of Ivan Turgenev "Notes of the Hunter": "L'gov is a big steppe village with a very old stone one-headed church and two mills on the swampy Rosota river. This river five versts away from L'gov turns into a wide pond, which is overgrown with dense reeds, orlovskoi - mayer, at the edges and in some places in the middle. On this pond, in the backwaters or lulls between the reeds, countless ducks of all possible species were bred and kept: mallards, half-mallards, pintails, teals, diving ducks, etc.".

Ivan Sergeyevich loved to hunt here, and, incidentally, an amusing incident happened to him on the L'gov pond. The boat the hunters were on was leaking water little by little. It was being poured out of a bucket. Having been carried away by the successful shooting, they stopped emptying the water, the boat got full of water and overturned when the hunters were taking the killed duck out of the lake. Fortunately, it didn't happen in deep water, and the adventure ended safely.

The project is aimed at revival and preservation of folklore and ethnographic traditions of the black soil zone of Russia, acquaintance with cultural traditions of Russian hinterland and neighboring countries.
